The protagonist of LIAR & SPY is named Georges (yes, with the 's') after the pointillist painter Seurat. And like Seurat's paintings, this enchanting novel is composed of small details which add up to a marvelous whole: the smell of a middle school cafeteria or apartment laundry room, very particular brands of candy, the best way to make scrambled eggs, a child's loft bed made from an old fire escape. It is also a novel of messages passed back and forth -- unusual fortune cookies, and Scrabble letter notes left on a nightstand. The question for the reader then becomes: What do all these messages mean, and do the details add up to the whole picture you were expecting, or not?

“This fantastic successor to Stead's Newbery Medal-winning When You Reach Me is a subtle mystery with a quirky and vulnerable protagonist and loving but fallible adults. Stead is a master of weaving big thematic questions with ingenious everyday details. She tells this story about lies, games, rules, and friendship through facts about maps of the tongue, seasonal candy, and invented spelling. I absolutely adore this book!”

The instant New York Times bestseller from the author of the Newbery Medal winner When You Reach Me: a story about spies, games, and friendship.
The first day Georges (the S is silent) moves into a new Brooklyn apartment, he sees a sign taped to a door in the basement: SPY CLUB MEETING—TODAY!
That’s how he meets his twelve-year-old neighbor Safer. He and Georges quickly become allies—and fellow spies. Their assignment? Tracking the mysterious Mr. X, who lives in the apartment upstairs. But as Safer’s requests become more and more demanding, Georges starts to wonder: how far is too far to go for your only friend?
