The course of this novel follows 24 hours in a day for Elena, a woman in her 60s who has Parkinson's. Instead of measuring her day in hours, she counts how many pills she has taken, which are essential for her to control her own body. This day is significant because she is traveling across the city to see Isabel, the last person she has hope will investigate her daughter, Rita's, death with her. Elena is tenacious and stubborn; she knows her daughter couldn't have hung herself in the church, because Rita always avoided churches on rainy days. Elena's journey ends up being an exploration of how the disabled are treated, how well we actually know our loved ones, and surprisingly, abortion.

After Rita is found dead in a church she used to attend, the official investigation into the incident is quickly closed. Her sickly mother is the only person still determined to find the culprit. Chronicling a difficult journey across the suburbs of the city, an old debt and a revealing conversation, Elena Knows unravels the secrets of its characters and the hidden facets of authoritarianism and hypocrisy in our society.
