Jane moves to Boyne City, Michigan to teach second grade and soon falls head over heels for the local lothario, Duncan, who has seemingly slept with every woman in town. And, somehow, has remained friendly with all of them—doing housework, fixing furniture, or mowing lawns long after any fling has ended. Because of this, everyone in Boyne City seems to have an opinion about Jane’s relationship and isn’t shy about voicing it (every trip to the grocery store seems to involve seeing a former flame). And Duncan comes with his own cast of characters: his ex-wife, Aggie, and her eccentric husband, Gary; his co-dependent co-worker, Jimmy, who seems only to drop by at the most inopportune times. Not to mention Jane’s own mother is the kind who always knows best. As Jane begins to wonder whether this is the life she really wants, a terrible accident leaves her inextricably tied to Duncan, Jimmy, Aggie, and Gary. And as Early Morning Riser unfolds, we see Jane learn to fall in love with this unconventional family fate has chosen for her, learn that sometimes those make for the best families of all.

Katherine Heiny is the author of Standard Deviation and Single, Carefree, Mellow, and her short fiction has appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and many other magazines.
