About the book: A haunting novel of nautical adventure, love, ghosts, and tragedy on the Great Lakes. In her eighty-fifth year, Fern Halvorson recalls her childhood journey on a great coal-fired ferry in the icy winter of 1936--and the secret she has kept since that ill-fated voyage.

Lee Zacharias is the author of four previous books, including The Only Sounds We Make and Lessons, a Book of the Month Club selection. Her work has appeared in the Best American Essays series. Born in Chicago and raised in Hammond, Indiana, she is professor emerita of English at the University of North Carolina Greensboro.

Born in the Great Lakes basin, Alison Swan is a Mesa Refuge alum and a Petoskey Prize for Grassroots Environmental Leadership co-winner. Her poems and environmental writing have appeared in two chapbooks and in many anthologies and journals. She teaches at Western Michigan University and lives in the Huron and Kalamazoo River watersheds. Her Great Lakes collection, Fresh Water, was named a Michigan Notable Book. Her latest collection, A Fine Canopy, is available for preorder.
