Poetry at Literati: Sarah Carson & Ryler Dustin

Monday, November 21, 2022 - 6:30pm

We're pleased to welcome Sarah Carson in support of her new collection of poems How to Baptize a Child in Flint, Michigan. She will be joined by poet Ryler Dustin.

Please note: Masks are required at Literati Bookstore events.

Spanning girlhood to motherhood, How to Baptize a Child in Flint, Michigan traces the lineage of four generations of a Flint, Michigan family--from the trailer park to the factory floor to, perhaps, a future far away. These poems examine the wreckage of the American Dream and ask who will answer for the promises we were made to believe as children: God? Industry? America? If we are all a part of the problem, are we are also all a part of the cure?

Sarah Carson was born and raised in Michigan but now lives in Chicago. Her poetry and short stories have appeared in Cream City Review, Columbia Poetry Review, Diagram, Guernica, and the Nashville Review, among others. She is also the author of three chapbooks and the full-length collection: Poems in which You Die (Bat Cat Press). She blogs at sarahamycarson.com.

Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, Ryler Dustin has represented Seattle on the final stage of the Individual World Poetry Slam and headlined at slam venues across the U.S. He has been awarded residencies from the Jack Kerouac Project of Orlando and the Margery Davis Boyden Wilderness Writing Residency, and his poems appear in outlets like American Life in PoetryVerse DailyGulf Coast, and The Best of Iron Horse.

A passionate educator, he led an award-winning after-school poetry program in Houston, visited classrooms through Writers in the Schools, and facilitated community writing with InPrint. He currently teaches at Albion College in Michigan.
