His Majesty's Dragon: Book One of the Temeraire By Naomi Novik Cover Image

Published: Del Rey - October 19th, 2021

His Majesty's Dragon is a retelling of the Napoleonic Wars if there were an airforce made up of dragons. Dragons with guns!! Must I really say more? Reminiscent of Eragon and How to Train Your Dragon with a historical twist, this book is an underrated favorite of mine that deserves so much more clout. Very classic fantasy fun!

Uprooted is one of the most gorgeously written standalone fantasy novels I've ever read. You will fall in love with the characters & become obsessed with the magic system and worldbuilding. It reads undeniably reminiscent of folklore and fairytales, and is the perfect sorcery-infused introduction to Naomi Novik's work!!

When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain is the second standalone in the Singing Hills Cycle, a gorgeous series of novellas that feed me that fable & fairytale content I'm always hungry for. Each book weaves in different queer dynamics but this one in particular is heavy on the lesbians, which makes it a winner for me. You will devour these delectable stories in one sitting -- I can't recommend the experience enough!

Published: Vintage - April 7th, 2009

This is the only book I was assigned in high school that I still regularly reread. Edward is the original unhinged boyfriend, and the skeletons in his closet (or attic) will have you screaming at the page. I can't recommend a more genuinely enjoyable classic!

I Was Born For This should be required reading for anyone that's ever been in a fandom. As always, Oseman's characters are compelling in a way no other author has achieved for me, and in this standalone the character relationships go above and beyond. This book will make you feel deep, twisty-turvy teenage feelings.

This book is the evolution-based, spiders rule the world, sci-fi masterpiece that's going to knock your socks off. I left this book in genuine shock-it was one of the most beautifully written and well thought out worlds I've ever had the pleasure of jumping in to. And the spiders aren't even that bad, I promise.

Jade City is the action-packed mafia fantasy you didn't know you needed. The complicated, Godfather-esque dynamics between the Kaul siblings are too enthralling to put the book down, and the entirely unique jade-based magic system makes for an instant five star read. Visit the island of Kekon for a fresh breath of air in the fantasy genre.

The Way of Kings: Book One of the Stormlight Archive By Brandon Sanderson Cover Image

Published: Tor Books - March 4th, 2014

The Stormlight Archive has amassed a cult following for a reason, and I am part of the cult! I'm honestly obsessed with everything Brandon Sanderson does but this series is far and away the pinnacle of his writing. The worldbuilding is beyond good, but I particularly adore his characters--if you don't fall in love with Kaladin I don't know if we read the same series. This is one that you're never going to regret picking up.

Funny Story By Emily Henry Cover Image

Published: Berkley - April 23rd, 2024

Funny Story is my favorite Emily Henry book so far!! I immediately fell in love with Daphne and Miles, even as they painfully fell out of love with their respective ex-fiances. Henry writes Michigan with such atmospheric romance that I found myself nostalgic for the state I'm already lucky enough to live in. I enjoyed walking through Waning Bay as much as our characters did, and as much as I ended up enjoying this story!

The Warm Hands of Ghosts: A Novel By Katherine Arden Cover Image
ISBN: 9780593128251

Published: Del Rey - February 13th, 2024

This book is a breathtaking, richly researched fantasy take on WWI. Arden weaves a story as devastating as it is ultimately hopeful, with prose that takes the reader by the hand, drags them into the trenches, and leads them through the shattered lives of our main characters. I fell in love with Laura, Freddie and Winter to a degree that bordered on infatuation; once I had picked this book up I don't think I put it down for anything other than sleep. This story will explosively blow you apart and then carefully, gradually, put you back together.

Inkheart is the series that made me fall head-over-heels, down-the-rabbit-hole in love with reading. There is no middle grade series with more delectable prose, better characters, or a story that will live in your heart for longer. Inkheart showed me the places reading could bring me, and the series just gets better and better. And the books hold up for adult readers--do yourself a major favor and make this one your next read.

Published: Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers - November 28th, 2017

Scythe is the underrated YA dystopia banger that I wish the rest of the world was also obsessed with. Rarely have I found such instantly compelling worldbuilding and characters--in a world in which death has been medically cured, how does the human race attempt to humanely cull the population? Obviously by severely traumatizing teenagers and making them kill strangers! This series just gets better with each book, and if you don't like it you can feel free to come by and kill me. :)

Iron Widow By Xiran Jay Zhao Cover Image

Published: Tundra Books - February 28th, 2023

Iron Widow is the brutal, good-for-her YA scifi debut you didn't know you needed. This has paradoxically become something of a comfort reread for me, and it is the only book I own in both hardcover and paperback--among the dystopian, shattered landscape I found characters struggling against structural injustice with all their might, and I fell deeply in love with them. I promise you will too.
